Youth basketball participation across Lewiston and Auburn has grown substantially over the past several seasons, according to recreation department officials, who say enrollment numbers have required expanded gym scheduling and additional volunteer coaches to keep pace with demand.
Recreation officials attribute the growth partly to the area's increasingly diverse youth population, with basketball drawing broad participation across the community's varied cultural backgrounds. League organizers say they have worked to keep registration costs low to ensure the growth remains accessible to families across income levels.

Coaches describe a noticeable increase in skill level among younger age groups as well, which some attribute to greater exposure to organized basketball at earlier ages than in past generations. Several volunteer coaches said they now spend more time on structured skill development than in previous years, when practices were more informally organized.
League officials say they are exploring partnerships with local schools to secure additional gym time, describing facility access as the primary constraint on continued program growth.
