Shipbuilding remains one of the Midcoast's largest employers, and companies in Bath say maintaining that workforce is becoming as important as securing new contracts. With a significant share of skilled welders, pipefitters and electricians approaching retirement age, yards have expanded apprenticeship partnerships with regional technical schools.
Industry representatives describe the effort as a multi-year undertaking, noting that specialized shipbuilding trades take years to develop fully. Several apprenticeship graduates interviewed said the programs offered a stable, well-paying career path without requiring a four-year degree.
A Steady Order Book
Order backlogs have remained relatively steady, giving companies confidence to invest in longer-term training pipelines rather than relying solely on experienced hires from elsewhere. Local officials say the shipbuilding sector's stability has helped anchor the broader Bath-area economy even as other manufacturing sectors have faced more volatility.
Company leaders caution that workforce investment alone will not solve every challenge, particularly as competition for skilled tradespeople extends well beyond Maine's borders.
